Skin Cancer

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the UK — and for most patients, surgery remains the most effective treatment. Getting it right the first time matters: the completeness of the initial excision, the quality of the reconstruction, and the experience of the surgeon performing it all directly affect outcomes.

Mr Matthew Potter is a consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon whose NHS practice is primarily dedicated to skin cancer, complex head and neck cancer, and the reconstruction of major cancer defects. He completed the final part of his surgical training as a fellow in Queensland, Australia — an area with the highest recorded incidence of skin cancer in the world — before bringing that expertise back to the UK.

He is a member of two skin cancer multidisciplinary teams in Oxford and Swindon, the Head and Neck MDT and Skull Base team in Oxford, and the Thames Valley skin cancer specialist group. He holds a position on the National CRUK skin cancer research panel and is part of an international study into improving outcomes in Merkel cell carcinoma. His excision rates for BCC and SCC exceed the national average, and his sentinel lymph node biopsy outcomes for melanoma are among the best recorded worldwide. He has presented and published extensively on all types of skin cancer.

For many patients, a skin cancer diagnosis is the first time they have needed specialist surgical care. Mr Potter’s approach is to explain clearly, assess thoroughly, and ensure every patient understands their diagnosis, their options, and what to expect — before any decision is made.

Skin Cancer Treatments

Specialist surgical excision and reconstruction combined with sentinel lymph node biopsy — the procedure that determines whether melanoma has spread. Mr Potter’s outcomes for this procedure are among the best recorded nationally and internationally.

Following Mohs micrographic surgery by a specialist dermatologist, Mr Potter reconstructs the defect — using aesthetic surgical principles to minimise scarring and preserve function.
A rare but aggressive skin cancer. Mr Potter treats all Merkel cell carcinomas through Oxford’s multidisciplinary skin cancer meeting and is involved in international research into improving outcomes.
Advanced skin cancers of the head and neck involving the lymph nodes, skull, facial nerve, ear, nose, or orbit. Mr Potter has performed 158 neck dissections and 144 skull base cases, working alongside ENT and neurosurgical colleagues.

Multidisciplinary Care

All skin cancer cases Mr Potter treats are discussed at a multidisciplinary team meeting — in Oxford and Swindon — where consultant radiologists, oncologists, pathologists, dermatologists, and specialist surgeons review each case collectively. This is not a formality. It ensures every patient receives the most appropriate treatment plan, with all options — surgical and non-surgical — considered before any decision is made.

For complex or advanced cases, Mr Potter works alongside a dedicated team of ENT surgeons, neurosurgeons, skull base specialists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists. He also works alongside four Mohs dermatologists for cases where minimal margin excision is required.

Where non-surgical treatments — radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or a combination — are more appropriate than surgery alone, these will be discussed and coordinated through the multidisciplinary team. Each patient’s case is reviewed individually and a range of options presented where they exist.
