Lip Lift
The lip ages due to loss of tissue and fat. The ageing lip curls inwards, causing a loss of show of the pink skin and an increased length of lip to the nose. This is compounded by a loss of show ofthe upper teeth at rest.
Conventional rejuvenation techniques have tried to correct this ageing by the use of fillers. The intention of the fillers is to increase the bulk of the upper lip. This increased bulk is planned to cause the lip to bulge out increasing the amount of pink lip (vermillion) on show. However with the increased volume of filler, the lip bulges both in the pink area but also most notably under the normal skin causing the inevitable “Trout Pout.” Fillers do not address the descent of the lip, the lack of dental show and also the lack of pink vermillion.
Each face has natural proportions and the lip is a key area that respects these proportions. The upper lip has a specific proportion relating to the size of the lower lip and the lower lip a specific proportion to the entire lower third of the face. Restoring the position and degree of show of the
pink vermilion skin varies from person to person.
Mr Potter uses a combination of surgical and non surgical techniques to treat lip ageing. The surgical technique is a lip lift. This removes a portion of the upper lip from an area just hidden under the nose. This elevates the lip as well as increases dental show and the amount of pink lip on show. Your lip and lower face will be assessed with regard to the proportions outlined above to give the specific amount of tissue to be removed to correctly rejuvenate the lip. Fine lines to the upper lip can also be addressed with micro lipofilling. Micro fat filling or Hyaluron fillers may also be used to emphasise the lip/skin junction. The aim of this approach is to subtly rejuvenate the lip to keep this in balance with proportions of the lower third of the face.

Post operative Care
You will need oral pain killers for a few days.
You will be advised to shower and wash the area every day.
You will have fine sutures removed where necessary at a week.
You will be given an antibiotic ointment to apply to the wounds twice a day.
You will need to apply antibiotic ointment to the suture line for a week following the procedure
It is advised to sleep using three pillows and if possible facing up.
Most people leave at least a week before returning to work.
Patients normally retum to work after the sutures have been removed.
We encourage all wounds to be washed with soap and water twice daily. You will be reviewed at two weeks by Mr Potter and at this stage he may encourage you to
moisturise and massage the scars if necessary to improve the speed at which they mature.
The Procedure
You will be admitted on the day of the procedure. The operation is undertaken with a local anaesthetic. This is not a direct injection of local into the lip as this is extremely painful. The area is anaesthetised by numbing the two nerves that supply the lip with its sensation. This is undertaken through two small fine injections in the upper cheek. On average the operation takes 1 hour. This is routinely undertaken as a day case.
The lip will swell slightly after the procedure
